The Coffee Gadgets That Drain Your Wallet: Cute but Useless Tools Every Coffee Lover Buys

People often say you should never fall in love with anything—because your wallet will suffer for it. Coffee lovers know this all too well. At some point, we all stop calculating how much we’ve sunk into this bottomless “hobby pit.” I guess this is what people mean when they say, “money can buy happiness.”

Recently, I came across something that… well, honestly, feels a bit pointless. Let’s just call it a cute little “coffee gadget that does almost nothing.” That inspired me to write about those items that don’t have much real purpose, aren’t very expensive, but somehow manage to tempt you into buying them anyway—slowly draining your wallet, haha.

1. The Bean Bowl That Looks Like a Martial Arts Weapon

The first item is this bean bowl that looks like it belongs in an old kung fu movie. It’s meant for weighing coffee beans. Usually, we just weigh beans directly in a dosing cup or on a tray—nothing complicated. Some baristas mist their beans with water before grinding, so this bowl includes a little open-and-close mechanism: pour in the beans, spray, close the lid, and shake.

But… does this actually do anything? The moment you spray the water, the mist sticks to the beans anyway. Shaking doesn’t achieve any magical “even distribution.” Instead of shaking, you’d be better off using a finer mist sprayer or simply spreading the beans out on a tray before spraying.

I’m pretty sure this bowl is a 3D-printed product. The price isn’t high, but honestly? I just don’t see the point. I’d never buy it. It even feels a bit like an “IQ tax.” What do you think?

2. Hanging Hooks for Keeping a Home Espresso Setup Compact

When setting up a compact home espresso bar, people try to use vertical space to keep the countertop as clear as possible. So many tools end up being hung on the side of the machine. For example, this hook that attaches to your espresso machine so you can hang portafilters. The other side can hold a hook for your tamper and distributor.

I understand the idea behind the design, but from an actual workflow perspective, it’s not very practical. These tools sit outside your direct line of sight and require extra movement to reach—yet making espresso requires a smooth, uninterrupted flow.

That’s why I prefer multifunctional knock boxes that integrate everything: portafilter slots, a tamper stand, a distributor stand, and the knock box itself. It doesn’t take up much space, and everything stays within one tight, efficient range. Much quicker and more comfortable.

3. PUQ’s New Espresso Machine Cleaning Tool

PUQ is known for their tamping and puck preparation tools, and many people already trust their products. Recently, I noticed they’re launching something new (as of the time I’m writing this, it’s not officially released yet). It’s the first product in their new Host series, called the Q-BRUSH.

The entire thing looks like a portafilter, but it’s dual-purpose:

  • One side is a blind basket, designed to make backflushing easier.

  • Flip it around and the other side becomes a nylon cleaning brush for the group head.

The handle is shaped like a pair of tongs, so you can repeatedly squeeze and release to move the bristles inside the group head—making the cleaning motion much more controlled.

It also comes with a container that catches wastewater during cleaning. You can collect and dump it afterward. I think this tool has potential. You can feel the designer’s intention to combine functionality and convenience, reducing steps and simplifying the cleaning routine.

It’s expected to release sometime next year. The price is still unknown, and value-for-money will definitely determine whether people want to buy it. The combined design does look a bit bulky, though—I’m curious how smooth it will feel during actual use.

What about you? Do you have any “cute but useless” coffee gadgets—things you bought, barely used, and now sit there as adorable little money-drainers? Share your experience and tell us how your wallet got thinner!
